My Thoughts after Award by Lao Wu (Utopia)
Having been serving in Guangzhou Youth Volunteer Association notelessly for many years, I think the volunteer job is my greatest honor. In March 2005, I was honorably awarded with “the golden prize of 2004 Youth Volunteer Service of China” by the Central Commission of China Communist Youth League. To some extent, I felt somewhat ashamed to accept the prize because many of my dreams had not been realized and I had not been the best as I wished to be. However, when I thought that the honor also belonged to all the volunteers of GYVA, and would be good for the publication of our future volunteer work, I then delightedly went and accept the award.
We have got used to encourage each other in frustrations and more used to power up in the achieved successes, so that we can go further with more confidence step by step. Why choose to be a volunteer? First, it is a trial and a practical feeling of being a social participant, then it is the responsibility and the persistence.
The high spirit when I joined into GYVA in 2000 has been turned into the many specific small things: From visiting an old widowed, learning how to communicate with old persons, taking an old person to hospital, fixing their appliances, cleaning… to being captain of Qizhi Service Team, then, started learning all kinds of medical knowledge, helping children with cerebral paralysis to recover, and teaching the kids in welfare house to draw and to write. In the many “thank you” that I have heard, the most unforgettable sound was from a cerebral paralysis kid; after over half a year recovery treatment, the kid slowly opened his mouth and said the word “Xiexie (Thank you)”. From then on, I have got the happiness that will never dry, though such happiness is usually accompanied with some pale sadness. The hard life of the disabled, the bad education conditions of the mountain area children, the loneliness and the helpless of the street sleepers, the confession voices of the delinquent children, the expecting eyes of the orphans… all these make my soul unrestful and sad. Sometimes, I would feel great pleasant for one of their thank you or just a little of their progresses. But, most of the time, I feel I am really so weak, what I can do is so little and little whilst those who are in need are so many and many.
We work steadily to today. All these make me feel more confident towards tomorrow. I have seen a civilian society come into being. However, compare with some advanced countries and regions, we still have much more work to do. I wish some day we have more people who take the volunteer job as a common thing, like a daily meal of a leisure drink, as the citizens in Hong Kong do, to form the volunteer job as a culture, as a convention.
Years’ insistence is a wish to pass over a love. Years’ insistence is because of the purest smiles and the clearest eyes in I saw in serving. I am not alone in this road, because there are many people in the same road, and because I believe in this road I can meet many more people who want to dedicate themselves in volunteer jobs and who have a same name as I do – Volunteer!
Wishes from a colorless world
无色世界的祝福 by Si Niang (Also know as so-and-so)
To give is one way or intercommunication? The beneficiary is one side or both?
A real story is shared for everybody:
On March 21st 2005, Monday, noon time, at the entrance of a post office in Dongshan District, an old beggar, Diet Coffee and Si Niang.
I was going to post a letter to one of my best high classmates in the UK in the break time at noon, Diet Coffee accompanied on my way to Dongshan post office.
I was such a pepperbox that I almost rushed into the post office once arrived.
But, Diet Coffee held me and asked me if I had got some small changes.
I looked into every pockets and got only a five-dime note, passed to him. I was curious why he asked for small changes.
He took the note and gave to the old beggar outside the post office entrance.
Then, I noticed that the old man, blind, was speaking loudly and hopingly all the time: “Wish you good health and peace in and out!” But, I didn’t pay more attention to the old man, what I cared about was the letter that I was going to post.
Letter, weighed. I, paid. After somewhile, my mission was accomplished and I was delightedly walking out of the office.
Diet Coffee’s first word was: “He wishes you good health and peace in and out!” (He passed the old man’s wishes to me.)
Next day, Diet Coffee gave me a ring. In the phone talk, I knew another story.
That day, a granny after me also gave the old man some money. The old man spoke loudly: “Wish you good health and peace in and out!” So, the granny smiled and offered him a bow and replied with a thank you.
It was she to give, but she said “thank you” for his wishes… (Reminded that the old man was blind, he couldn’t see her bow; but the granny did so still.)
Yes, the granny was giving her money, and so the old man is giving his wishes. The old man was benefited with the granny’s changes and the granny was delighted with the old man’s wishes.
ETEi
Dear friends, are you so moved as I am now? I think about our volunteer job. Many people are dedicatedly in creating love but nothing else with me.
Smile, dedication, insistence… I have more courage.
